Beside the 190 and 219, the 220S saloon debuted in 1956 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Powered by an upgraded (100bhp) version of the 219's 2,195cc overhead-camshaft six-cylinder engine, the 220S was capable of reaching around 100mph.
Apart from a power increase to 106bhp in 1957, the 220S changed little in the course of its comparatively short life, production ceasing in October 1959. Priced at DM 21,500, the 220S was one of the most expensive, and exclusive, models in the Mercedes-Benz range. Only 1,251 220S coupés were made between 1956 and 1959 compared with 2,178 cabriolets.
The 220S coupé that we are delighted to offer was driven and cosseted for over many years by its first owner and, subsequently, his widow who continued to use the car after his death. Between them they drove the car approximately 75,000 kilometres (46,500 miles). After the Widow’s own death in 2001, the car was stored by Mercedes-Benz before a long-time Mercedes-Benz employee, who incidentally had been looking after the 220S while in storage, was able to purchase it once the matters of probate were concluded. In June 2005 the car was displayed at the premises of the Mercedes-Benz Club in the heart of Brussels. It was there that a local gentleman fell in love with it and subsequently he managed to secure it, becoming its third owner.
After he acquired the car, he used it very sparingly and upon selling in early 2013 (to the current and fourth owner) it was showing approx. 81,100 kilometres (50,400 miles).
It passed onto our client, an avid collector of rare Mercedes-Benz cars, who after seeing it knew that good examples of 220S Coupes come around very rarely. He has enjoyed owning the car for over four years and has spent a good amount of money in keeping it running well. As soon as he took delivery of it, he sent it off to the renowned Frank Dale and Stepsons (at the time, Gordon Dale Enterprises) to sharpen up her performance to the sum of £11,000.
With few owners and relatively little use, this rare and unrestored 220S coupe signifies a wonderful chance for the eagle-eyed collector to own one of these elegant, limited-edition Mercedes-Benz models of the 1950’s.
