The Renault 4 was produced by Renault between 1961 and 1994 and was the first Front-Wheel-Drive family car produced by Renault.
Released at a time when several decades of economic stagnation were giving way to growing prosperity and surging car ownership in France – 1 million units were produced in the first 4.5 years and over 8 million were produced across the entire production run.
Originally a response to Citroen’s legendary 2CV – the brief was the create the next everyman’s car that was capable of satisfying the needs of most consumers.
The car features a 1,108cc engine mated to a 4-Speed transmission. The engine was the well proven unit from the Renault 6 TL, albeit detuned for better economy. Suspension comprised of four-wheel torsion-bar independent suspension which was an innovation that would feature on numerous front engined Renaults throughout the 60’s and 70’s.
One of the more unique quirks of this car is that the wheelbase is shorter on the left than on the right because the rear wheels are not mounted directly opposite one another. This allowed the transverse torsion bars in the rear to be located behind one another without affecting handling.
In 1987 the R4 GTL arrived and featured the Renault 6 TL engine and bigger drum brakes – it can be identified thanks to the grey front grille, grey bumpers and grey strips across the bottoms of the doors.
The example we have on offer was manufactured in 1985 and comes complete with original handbook and documentation spanning from original vehicle order form through to its most recent MOT and a ream of service documentation in between.
Arguably one of the finest examples of the greatest iteration of the legendary Renault 4 GTL – meticulously well cared for, fantastic for a usable, quirky town runaround!
